What is an Abacus Investment Account?


Abacus Investment Account is an account held in custody by a licensed custodian, SBM Bank Kenya. This account holds all shares, bonds, and derivatives.

How do I open an Abacus Investment Account?

You can open an account by downloading our app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
You may also navigate to https://abacus.co.ke/ on your laptop or PC to sign up using our Web Platform.
Once you sign up successfully and activate trading, you will get an Abacus Investment Account.

What are the benefits of opening an Abacus Investment Account?

1. You don’t have to open a CDS Account
This is because all the assets you own are held in custody by SBM Bank.

2. Opening an account is faster and more efficient
To open an Abacus Investments Account, you don’t have to physically take your documents to Abacus. All you have to do is sign up on Abacus, upload the required documents and activate trading.

3.One account for all asset classes
Abacus Investment Account enables you to hold all asset classes e.g. equities(shares or stocks), unit trusts and fixed income (bonds) in one account.

What is the difference between an Abacus Investment Account and a CDS account?

An Abacus Investments Account allows you to hold various asset classes in one account while a CDS Account limits you to only equities (shares).

I currently have a broker, and a CDS account, but would like to use Abacus for trading. How do I go about it?

At the moment, you will not be able to trade using your CDS Account because we currently do not have a working integration with participating brokers in the market except Genghis Capital. But don't worry, you can still trade when you open an Abacus Investment Account.

How secure is my Abacus trading account? (How safe is the information provided)

We have implemented a variety of security measures to ensure the safety of your information when you place an order or access your personal information with our app.

What is the minimum amount of shares I can buy?

The minimum number of shares you can buy is 100 shares. Also, note that shares can only be bought in lots of 100, say 100, 200, 300, etc.What are splits?

Splits are price groups to which people are buying or selling. For example, if you want to buy 1,000 shares at KES 3, and someone else wants to buy 2,000 shares at KES 3. The quantity would be 3,000 shares that are to be bought at KES 3, with two splits (yours and the other persons).

What does the validity period mean?

Validity period when placing an order is when your order will expire, so you can change the date you want your order to expire.
